FS2026 Cost & Manufacturing Concept Class Real World Task

Formula Student Team

Concept class teams: read on for the task you need to prepare for at this year's Silverstone finals.

Your team’s Cost lead has called a Leadership meeting to discuss the ongoing inflationary pressures acting on your team’s finances.

With inflation rising due to global events, your Cost lead is concerned that your budget and departmental allocation may now not be enough to complete the project with these cost pressures acting on it.

Your Cost lead explains that they are working with current sponsors and new to see if they can close the short fall but in the current economic environment, they cannot guarantee this can be achieved.

They task you and the team to come up with a plan to reduce your Bill of Material (BOM) cost spend by 10% and request you to achieve this without sacrificing your ultimate project goals.

Things you may wish to consider in your presentation (there may be others)

  • Benchmarking for cost reduction ideas
  • Make / buy study
  • Materials used, scrap rates, material optimisation etc.
  • Manufacturing process optimisation

There is no need to pre submit your Real-World Task, you will have 10 to 15 minutes to present to the judges at your Cost & Manufacturing Judging slot. It is totally up to you how you present to the judges but please be aware that there is no power provided in the Judging bays.
