Head Judge Mark Hassall shares an insider’s view and who will be competing in the finals at Silverstone this year.

Following some very busy days of organising and judging the virtual presentations, we are delighted that 109 teams (approximately 600 students) were able to present their Business Plans this year.

We saw 109 teams from 22 different countries participate, with UK and European teams making up the majority alongside those from Nigeria, Mexico, Egypt, Hong Kong, India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. It’s great to see the continued diversity of the UK’s competition and we look forward to seeing more teams join in years to come.

Congratulations to the finalists Sussex Racing, University of Nottingham Racing and FRTUCY from University of Cyprus and best of luck with your preparations for the finals at Silverstone. Congratulations also go to UPM Racing from UPM Technical University of Madrid for securing first place for the FS-AI Business Presentation Event – our first award winners of 2021.

We hope that all teams enjoyed the experience and took away useful feedback for your careers and to enhance your presentations for next year.

My thanks go out to all 40 judges on my team for their time and hard work, with over 130 hours of judging between us! A big thank you and best of luck goes to my deputy judge Rob Wild, who will be taking over the fun and games in 2022. Finally, my thanks go to Lucy Killington and her team at the IMechE for organising everything behind the scenes.
