The latest in our ongoing series of updates about activities at the Institution.

Dear Member,

Welcome to a new year at the Institution which brings some positive changes. Firstly, at the end of last year our Engineering Policy Team surveyed the membership to find out what areas you would like the Institution to take a lead on influencing in 2020. We had a great response showing the high level of interest you have in how the Institution works with others to ‘Improve the world through engineering’. You gave us some very clear messages and so we have adapted our main theme areas to work on your top four which were:

  • Climate change adaptation and mitigation
  • Delivering net zero
  • Future of transport
  • Education and diversity.

We will of course continue to work across as many other technical and regional areas as we can.  We look forward to engaging ever more closely with you on these issues throughout the year.

Secondly you will notice a small change to Professional Engineering (PE) magazine in 2020.  We are moving from the current eight to six, slightly larger, issues per year in print. It's a step that's been taken by many membership organisations, as print publishing has become an increasingly difficult commercial environment. We're committed to keeping IMechE members informed and entertained, and this change won't mean a drop in the amount or quality of content that you receive in your award-winning publication.

Importantly, in combination with PE we also have a number of other ways you can stay informed.  We are putting additional resources into our web and app coverage at www.imeche.org/news, and relaunching the PE newsletter, a concise round-up of the biggest news in engineering delivered straight to your inbox each week.  Please sign up for it if you haven’t already.

Finally, don’t forget that you can always customise your own membership account on our website by adjusting your preference centre.  In this way, you can retain control over the services you personally receive.  Your preferences give us excellent feedback on what works for you and the profession and what doesn’t.  You can then rest assured that we will take action on those to continuously improve the work that we do.
