Formula UCLan's Team Leader, Alex, talks about the design and build of the team's car ahead of Formula Student 2016.

We're Formula UCLan, a team of 3rd year students from the University of Central Lancashire studying BEng and MEng Motor Sports Engineering, and for us the design and build of the car is an assessed group project. An initiative we are taking this year is to also involve first and second year students in aspects of the build to better prepare them for the competition when the time comes for them to take over the team.

Our design path for the car this year is to keep the overall design simple and focus more time on ensuring the car is manufactured with plenty of time for testing before the competition. This way, the weaker aspects will be found with time to solve and time can be spent on driver training and finding the ideal setup. We are currently using last year's car as a mule to test and validate new ideas and components during the construction of the 2016 car.

What we're most proud of is that we'll be breaking the UCLan reputation of turning up with an untested and unfinished car. Last year the team didn't do well, due to not having a finished car for scrutineering. The only dynamic event the team managed to participated in was endurance, and it only managed three laps. Our goal this year is to find out what the Formula Student record for biggest overall place improvement from one year to the next and crush it!

We're looking forward to having a lot of fun at the event with the other Universities there. We're competitive but we like to keep the banter friendly. See you at Learn to win Live!
