Formula Student 2021 - March Update

Formula Student Team

In line with the deadline set out in the Key Dates, the Formula Student Organising Committee met this week to discuss whether there is a need to switch to Scenario B from our current plan of Scenario A1.

The key differences under Scenario B are:

  • Design and Cost judging ‘heats’ would take place online for FS Class
  • All FS-AI static events would take place online
  • Spectators would not be invited to attend a live event

We have considered the most up to date feedback from teams, the current roadmap for easing COVID restrictions in England including the UK vaccination programme and also our ongoing work with Motorsport UK for FS to be designated a ‘specified competition’ under the Department for Culture, Media and Sport’s (DCMS) elite sport pathway. The latter provides us with some options which may allow for exemptions to the requirement to self-isolate for attending international participants.

At this time we have decided to proceed with Scenario A1 but we will keep Scenario B options in mind as we progress with our planning. We would like to remind all teams that there are existing options for teams who are facing challenges, including the option for FS teams to switch to Concept Class which will be judged online in it’s entirety and the option to enter a second year vehicle (2YV) in both FS and FS-AI ADS classes. Please refer to the Key Dates for the deadlines associated with these options.

The next deadline in our scenario planning is the end of April to make a decision on whether there is a requirement to switch to Scenario C (fully virtual competition).
