Representatives from Botswana, Egypt, Kenya, Mauritius and Zambia attended the first Middle East and Africa (MEA) regional planning meeting, held in Durban, South Africa.
The meeting brought together volunteer country representatives to discuss the strategy and plans for the Institution to support existing members and the engineering community across the continent.
Geoff Cobb, Regional Chair for Middle East and Africa, said: “The weekend was extremely successful with enthusiastic participation throughout. Useful links were formed and confirmed, underlining the importance of the group and ‘hands-on’ activity. It is certainly something that we will be repeating in the MEA region.”
As Regional Chair, Geoff is keen to maintain the momentum and hold the next meeting in the Middle East in 2017.
Key discussion topics included the planning of events and researching the support needed for member volunteers across the region. It was emphasised that the role of volunteers is essential to the Institution and provides a link person on the ground for the Institution. This carries with it responsibilities such as member development and forming links with academia.
