News, rumours and gossip from the world of engineering

Recent weeks have sadly seen the passing of some musical and acting legends, including the great Alan Rickman, David Bowie and Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister, the lead singer of heavy-metal band Motörhead. Belgian astronomers made a touching celestial homage to Bowie by dedicating to him a lightning bolt-shaped constellation of stars, mimicking one of his album covers. And there was a science-themed tribute to heavy-metal megastar Lemmy Kilmister. A fan launched a petition on Change.org proposing “Lemmium” as the name for element 115 – a relatively new addition to the Periodic Table and one of the heaviest metals added to date. Eye hopes that the petition to enshrine in the Periodic Table one of heavy metal’s biggest icons is a success, if only so that teachers can have a valid reason to play the Motörhead hit The Ace of Spades in chemistry lessons.

We all know that France is a cheese-loving nation, but did you know that it also plans to create energy from the beloved dairy product? More precisely, a new power plant in the French Alps has begun generating electricity running off skimmed whey – a byproduct from making the local Savoie region’s Beaufort cheese. The plant in Albertville converts the whey into biogas using bacteria. The biogas is fed through an engine that heats water and generates electricity. The whey-fuelled plant will produce 2.8 million kWh a year, enough to provide power to 1,500 people. I’ll never look at a block of cheese the same way again.
