Developing professionals through competency framework

​A seminar examining HUBCOs operating assets and growing business; competence-based professional development and performance evaluation and succession planning by Hub Power Company Limited was organised by IMechE GIK Chapter, at Topi, Pakistan.

The speaker was Dr Mohammed Uneeb Vice Chair, IMechE Pakistan Group. The lecture was attended by approximately 20 members.

The senior year, Class of 2018, will be entering their professional life within a span of few months. Therefore, it was proposed to hold a lecture which will shed light on the essential requirements desired by the companies from the fresh graduates. Dr Wasim Khan CEng FIMechE and Mr. Usama Zulfiqar’, YM Chair, GIKI Student Chapter and their team arranged the event. The event was thought to be crucial for developing the relationship between academia and industry.

The Hub Power Company Limited (HUBCO) is the first and largest independent power producer (IPP) in the country with a combined installed power generation capacity of 2920 MW. Its operating assets include 1292 MW RFO fired steam power plant, 225 MW RFP fired reciprocating engines, 84 MW Laraib hydel plant and 1320 MW coal fired plant. The company’s growth projects include two mine-mouth lignite coal fired projects 330 MW.  The company also holds 8% shareholding in Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company Limited (SECMC).

In order to support the operating assets and the growing business, a structured programme for professional development is always required to ensure that the organisation recruits high quality staff which can fulfill the required skill sets, set expectations for every new and existing employee, provide an effective framework for performance evaluation and succession planning, prepare employees for career progression and improve employee engagement.

The lecture, delivered by Dr. Muhammad Uneeb, described HUBCO’s journey from a single project achieving commercial operation in 1997 to transform into the leading energy company with varied technologies and a structured framework for professional development.
