For engineers, becoming Chartered is more than a title. It’s proof that you meet internationally recognised standards, solve complex problems, and contribute to the future of engineering.

Chartered Week is here, and it’s a chance to recognise engineers and teams who are making a tangible difference in their industries. This year’s theme, “Celebrating Trusted Professionals”, highlights how Chartered Engineers uphold high standards of competence, conduct and leadership, building trust in the professions that shape our world.

In an open letter to Pat McFaddon, the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, the Chartered Week Alliance and IMechE are calling on the government to take a lead in expecting and promoting registration and Chartered status for all professionals, including within the Civil Service. The Chartered Week Alliance is a coalition of over 40 Chartered and professional organisations.

Why chartered status matters

Chartered Engineers (CEng) are recognised for their technical expertise, ethical practice and leadership. Achieving Chartered status demonstrates that you can deliver safe, efficient and innovative solutions, and it provides real career advantages.

Key benefits include:
  • professional recognition: an internationally recognised qualification showing you meet the highest standards
  • career advancement: access to new roles, higher earning potential and leadership opportunities
  • networking: connect with IMechE members worldwide, share knowledge, mentor and collaborate
  • resources and support: training, events, specialist publications, Continuous Professional Development tools, the IMechE library, and practical support via the Benevolent Fund.

Chartered status isn’t just personal recognition. It strengthens public confidence, supports your team, and helps drive engineering standards across industries.

Who can become a chartered engineer?

You can become Chartered through IMechE if you are a practising engineer ready to demonstrate your knowledge and experience.

Typical requirements include:

  • a four-year accredited MEng degree, or
  • a bachelor’s degree plus a master’s qualification, or
  • a bachelor’s degree with relevant professional experience, learning on the job, short courses, or part-time study.
Chartered Engineers apply their advanced technical knowledge to solve complex problems, lead projects and influence innovation in their sector.
