Sandfields Pumping Station in Lichfield was recognised with an IMechE Engineering Heritage Award, celebrating its pivotal role in improving public health through engineering innovation.
Built in 1855, the site helped transform life in the Black Country by delivering clean, safe drinking water to rapidly growing industrial communities. At a time when cholera outbreaks were devastating the region, its pioneering Cornish beam engine provided a reliable water supply that protected thousands of lives. This is a lasting example of how engineering can drive societal change. Honouring a legacy of innovation Celebrations took place on Saturday 18 October 2025 to mark the unveiling of the Engineering Heritage Award plaque. The event was attended by IMechE President Matt Garside, local dignitaries, and volunteers from the Lichfield Waterworks Trust. The award placed Sandfields among an esteemed group of engineering landmarks recognised by the Institution, including Concorde, the Thames Barrier, and Bletchley Park’s Bombe machines. Community dedication Volunteers from the Lichfield Waterworks Trust have worked tirelessly to conserve the Grade II listed site, ensuring its story continues to inspire future engineers. Katy Shore-Kapsis, Chair of the Lichfield Waterworks Trust, said:
“This award is a huge honour for Sandfields and for everyone who has dedicated time and passion to keeping its legacy alive. The event was a celebration of history, engineering, and community spirit.”
Recognising engineering that shaped society Established in 1984, the IMechE Engineering Heritage Awards celebrate sites and artefacts that demonstrate how engineering has shaped the modern world.
