Institution news
2022 will be an exciting year for the Institution as we celebrate our 175th Anniversary on 27 January, 2022. The anniversary is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the achievements of IMechE and the contribution of mechanical engineering to society, whilst also inspiring a future generation of engineers. We aim to celebrate and honour our past whilst looking confidently to the future. #ForwardThinkers
The 175 celebratory events and activity will focus on how mechanical engineers can help to solve the global challenges we face today. Climate change, education infection control, and transport… how can mechanical engineering aid humanity?
We commence our celebrations on 7 October 2021, the anniversary of the day the Institution’s founders and #ForwardThinkers met at the Queen’s Hotel in Birmingham in 1846 to form a committee to draw up management rules for the Institution. On this day we’ll launch our 175 webpage which includes our #IMechE175 events schedule, 175 merchandise, and the release of our 175 promotional video.

Recently, a small team of IMechE staff, led by our very own IMechE archivist Lucy Bonner, made a trip to the Midlands, and stopped by key locations relevant to our foundation. Lucy met with some of our Birmingham based members and discussed the rich engineering heritage in the Midlands, while also learning about the exciting activities the Midland Region has coming up.
