“We committed to delivering those elements of the traditional FS event format which could be continued with or offered as virtual or simulation events to provide the fullest possible educational benefit to competing teams whilst complying with the social distancing regulations in force around the world due to COVID-19," explained Andrew Deakin, Chair of Formula Student.

"This allows teams to demonstrate the engineering work they have completed to date as well as how they have worked as a team to overcome the organisational challenges resulting from current lockdown restrictions. As this is something businesses across the world are experiencing, Formula Student continues to offer a real-world project experience for its participating students,”

Virtual Dynamic Events

The Acceleration and Skid-Pad events on 25-26 July 2020 will be replaced by Lap-Time Simulations that will use a Multi-Body Dynamics Model and recreations of the courses used at Silverstone. Secondly, online multiplayer competitive simulation races in Assetto Corsa will test the skills of its drivers, which mirrors the current popularity of e-sports racing.

Livestreams of all the simulation runs and Assetto Corsa racing will be available via the Formula Student YouTube channel; be sure to subscribe to the channel to receive alerts for when the streams are live.

In the meantime, here's a taster of what you can expect!

Mathworks Closing Awards Ceremony

This year's closing awards ceremony will take place at 5pm BST on 26 July 2020. This year features a unique panel discussion between representatives from Mercedes AMG HPP, Scuderia Ferrari, Prema Powerteam and MathWorks, who will be sharing insights about the skills and experiences they and other employers are looking for in the new hires.
