Academic requirements for professional registration
The academic requirements for CEng and IEng have been standardised with the introduction of UK-SPEC as follows:
CEng
- Accredited BEng (Hons) degree plus appropriate Masters degree
- Accredited BEng (Hons) degree plus approved Further Learning to Masters level
- Accredited MEng
IEng
- Accredited Bachelors degree
- HND/Foundation degree plus approved Further Learning to Bachelors level
- The current standards allow more flexibility for engineers with differing levels of qualifications to meet the academic requirements.
If your primary qualification is accredited by IMechE, it will have already met part or all of the benchmark academic requirements for becoming IEng or CEng registered.
If your degree is not accredited by the IMechE, it may be accredited by another Professional Engineering Institution or it may be covered by a mutual recognition accord.
if you are unsure if your degree is accredited or not, you should use the qualification checker
If you have a suitable level of qualification, but it is not accredited by the IMechE (see above) you will need to have your qualification checked by us to confirm that they contain enough Mechanical Engineering content.
This may be required by individuals to reach the current academic requirements. Further learning will bring your current academic qualification up to the necessary benchmark level for CEng or IEng registration.
