An Engineering Council entry fee is payable if your application for registration with the Engineering Council is successful.

In subsequent years, your Engineering Council annual fee will be paid at the rate advertised for that year.

Engineering Council registration fees are paid in addition to your IMechE annual subscription.

Each year you will receive an IMechE subscriptions notice detailing both your Engineering Council registration fee, if applicable, and your IMechE annual subscription.

Subscription reductions and other support

Retired members

Reduced fees for career breaks or altered financial circumstances

The Institution can support you at all stages of your career and can assist you if you need to take a break from work, or if you find yourself in altered financial circumstances.

Do you qualify for a reduced subscription?

If your income is below or around £16,000 per annum you may qualify for a reduced subscription. In addition, you may also qualify for a reduced subscription if any of the following situations apply to you, depending on any income amounts:

  • Currently on maternity or paternity leave
  • Taking a break from work to be the primary carer for young (pre-school age) children
  • Taking a break from work to care for a relative
  • Taking a break from work due to an illness
  • Working outside the UK as a volunteer
  • Serving in the military outside the UK.

Please note that a voluntary career break (e.g. to travel or to renovate property) would not normally meet the criteria for a reduced subscription. This would only be considered in exceptional circumstances which would need to be fully explained and supported by evidence in the application.

How you can apply for a reduced subscription

To apply for a reduced subscription, or for more information, please contact the Subscriptions Team tel: +44(0)1952 214 050 or subscriptions@imeche.org. All cases are reviewed on an individual basis, so even if your circumstances do not meet any of the above criteria we would still encourage you to contact the Subscriptions team to discuss your options.

Additional support for you and your family

As well as lowering your subscription fee, we would also encourage you to contact the Support Network to see what advice or help can be provided by the Institution's benevolent fund. The links in the section above will provide you with more information about the support offered. The Support Network is also able to help the partners and immediate family of Institution members. The Support Network does not just provide financial support, it can also provide debt and money advice, employment coaching, and general advice to help with everyday problems, plus much more.
