Annual subscription fees

Our fees vary according to your membership category, age and financial situation. You'll pay your first year's fee just after you join or upgrade.

Our subscription year runs from January to December. The pay structure is reviewed annually.

To renew online, log in to your account.

If you live in India, you can pay your subscription in rupees.

If you have a dual membership with another institution, you can continue to pay your EngC fees through them or you can transfer the payment to us.
 

Engineering Council registration entry fees

You only need to pay this fee when your application is successful. It also covers your first year's Engineering Council fee. This fee is paid in addition to your annual subscription fee - you will receive an invoice detailing both the EngC registration fee (if applicable) and your annual subscription when you are elected.

Subscription reductions and other support

Reduced fees for retired members

If you have retired from full-time employment and you are over 55 years of age we can reduce your annual subscription fee.

The annual fee for retired members in 2017 is £69 (regardless of membership grade).

If you pay an annual registration fee to the Engineering Council this will also be reduced as follows:

Please note, the Engineering Council fee is paid in addition to your annual subscription to the Institution.

If you're retired and your income, including pension, is less than £10,000 a year, you may qualify for a further reduced fee of £35 in 2017.


Reduced fees for career breaks or altered financial circumstances

The Institution can support you at all stages of your career and can assist you if you need to take a break from work, or if you find yourself in altered financial circumstances.

Do you qualify for a reduced subscription?

If your income is below or around £16,000 per annum you may qualify for a reduced subscription. In addition, you may also qualify for a reduced subscription if any of the following situations apply to you, depending on any income amounts:

  • Currently on maternity or paternity leave
  • Taking a break from work to be the primary carer for young (pre-school age) children
  • Taking a break from work to care for a relative
  • Taking a break from work due to an illness
  • Working outside the UK as a volunteer
  • Serving in the military outside the UK
  • In full-time post-graduate study, relevant to a career in engineering
How you can apply for a reduced subscription

All cases are reviewed on an individual basis, so even if your circumstances do not meet any of the above criteria we would still encourage you to contact the Subscriptions team to discuss your options.

Additional support for you and your family

As well as lowering your subscription fee, we would also encourage you to contact the Support Network to see what advice or help can be provided by the Institution's benevolent fund. The links in the section above will provide you with more information about the support offered. The Support Network is also able to help the partners and immediate family of Institution members. The Support Network doesn't just provide financial support, it can also provide debt and money advice, employment coaching, and general advice to help with everyday problems, plus much more. Reduced subscriptions for international members

If you live outside the UK and have an annual income equivalent to, or lower than, £16,000 you may be eligible for a reduced annual subscription fee.

And, if you pay them, your Engineering Council fees will also be reduced. For 2017, the fees are:

To apply, please complete the 2017 International Reduced Subscriptions Application Form and return it to the subscriptions team by email. Please include your membership number on the form.

If you're employed, you'll need to include your managing director, finance director, or HR director's signature to confirm that the details provided are correct.

If you're unemployed, please tick the relevant box on the form and sign it before returning it to the subscriptions team.

When applying, please include your application fee along with your documents.

There is no application fee for EngTech member applicants.


Re-applying for membership?

If you're applying again within two years of an unsuccessful member or Fellow application, the fee is £40.

Please note the application fee is non-refundable.

Application fees for transferring your membership to the Institution

If you are already registered as a Professional Engineer you can apply to the IMechE as an existing registrant. The application fee is £75.

You must already be registered through a nominated UK Institution, or you must be applying under the terms of our Mutual Recognition Agreements (ie Hong Kong Institute of Engineers, Engineers Ireland, IPENZ or Engineers Australia), or via the European Mobility Directive.

Monitored Professional Development Scheme (MPDS) fees

If you’re an IEng or a CEng candidate, there is an annual fee of £30 paid each January (in addition to your membership fee). This fee will appear on your annual IMechE subscription invoice.

Or, you can pay a lump sum of £150 – excluding your membership fee – and you’ll get unlimited access to our online reporting tool.

If you register in the second half of 2017 and want to pay annually, your fee will be charged at a pro rata rate before the £30 per annum rate is applied from 2018 onwards.

We do not accept American Express.
