STEMNET

Who are STEMNET?

STEMNET are a government initiative created to provide a way for scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians  to meet children and show them what is involved in their industry. STEMNET's vision is to increase young people's choice and chances through science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

The Institution work very closely with STEMNET.  If you are an engineer interesting in working with children in schools and giving them an idea of the type of engineering you work in (or have worked in) then they will be very interesting hearing from you.

How can I sign up?

You can register today as a STEMNET ambassador here or email Hazel who manages the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) ambassador programme.  Hazel can be contacted on ambassadors@imeche.org . STEMNET and IMechE share information so please select that you are an Institution member when you sign up.

What will happen next?

The STEMNET team in your local area will contact you and ask you in for a quick induction.  All STEMNET and IMechE ambassadors need to be criminal record bureau (CRB) checked and they will do this for free at your induction with only one online form to fill in before you attend.  CRB checks take approximately two weeks to be completed.

STEMNET will then keep you posted of schools that need your input. Many different types of request could come in; from a careers day it your local secondary school to a practical day of judging a year seven's project work. You are expected to do one event a year as a minimum.

How is an IMechE ambassador different?

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers uses the term ambassador to mean all members who volunteer.  This was because we found that for example,  if you were a chair of a regional committee you were also involved with STEM.  If you sign up with IMechE as an ambassador we know you are actively volunteering or interested in volunteering.  We never restrict members to volunteering in one area .To see just some of the areas the members volunteer go to our ambassador section of the website

You will be contacted about any roles that could be of interest that are not just schools or careers events.  We hope that as an ambassador you are interested in seeing what is going on.

There is no obligation to any of the roles we send around.

We do hope that you will sign up as both an IMechE ambassador and a STEMNET ambassador so that we can maintain our joined up approach.  Sign up as an IMechE ambassador by emailing Hazel on the below address.
