Medical Engineering, also known as Bioengineering or Biomedical Engineering is a diverse, exciting and relatively new area within the field of engineering.
The discipline spans a whole range of activities, integrating professional engineering with medical knowledge of the human body. Examples of work in this area are hip replacements,
pacemakers, computer simulations, artificial limbs, rehabilitation devices and robotic surgery. The field is rapidly evolving; there is a huge need for engineering input and there are excellent job prospects for graduates. Employment can be found within companies working on the design, development and manufacture of medical devices, in hospitals looking at providing non-clinical services, with government regulatory agencies and government or academic research facilities.
The aim of the Engineering in Medicine and Health Division is to bring together key workers from both medicine and engineering to discuss the latest advances and issues, to enable networking among different industry leaders, and to promote this growing field to government, healthcare professionals and the wider public.
We offer:
How the Division works, and how you can become involved
One of the major activities of the Division is organising seminars, workshops and conferences as part of the Institution’s learned society role, often in conjunction with other engineering and medical learned bodies.
These events are organised by small working parties called TACs (Technical Advisory Committees). The chairman of each TAC is usually a member of the Board, and (s)he will assemble a working party for each planned event consisting of experts in the field to define the programme, invite key speakers and review submitted papers.
Current TACs are in the areas of:
AGEING – Chairman Prof Garth Johnson
DIAGNOSTICS AND SENSING – Chairman Prof Brian Davies
INCONTINENCE – Chairman: Prof Alan Cottenden
ORTHOPAEDICS – Chairman Prof Mark Taylor
REHABILITATION AND THERAPEUTICS – Chairman Dr Mike Hillman
ROBOTICS – Chairman Dr Patrick Finlay
SPORTS ENGINEERING - Interim Chairman Prof Anthony Bull
VASCULAR – Chairman Prof Spencer Sherwin
We are always looking for new members for TACs, and we would be pleased to hear from you if you would be interested in joining one.
If your particular field of interest is not currently represented, please let us know and we will see how it can be accommodated. Contact health@imeche.org
Division Board
The Board of the Engineering in Medicine and Health Division is its governing body, and is composed of senior figures in medical and health engineering, including professors, company directors and consultant surgeons.
The Board provides strategic oversight of the Division’s activities which include events organised by TACs, publication of the Journal of Engineering in Medicine, educational and career-related activities and interaction with government and other Institutions. It meets usually twice a year in London. Membership of the Board is by election.
Any EMHD member can apply to join the Board; the Board may sometimes invite an application from someone if they have specific skills. Candidates have normally demonstrated a commitment to the activities of the Division through membership of TACs or other initiatives.
If you would like further information about the TACs, Board or EMHD as a division please contact Bubli Miah on +44 (0) 20 7304 6829 or health@imeche.org
