The Structural Technology and Materials Group (STMG) covers materials testing, behaviour modelling, numerical stress analysis, theoretical and experimental stress analysis.
The group investigates these elements' relationship to design, structural integrity and component life assessment methods.
The STMG disseminates information related to fatigue, fracture, creep, corrosion and the effects which manufacturing processes have on these material properties, and organises seminars, conferences and short courses and competitions.

Engineering Simulation Techniques: Outstanding Project Award
1st Prize: £1,000, 2nd Prize: £500. Awarded by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and NAFEMS.
In recognition of the importance of the University sector to the advancement of numerical simulation, and to encourage undergraduate students to work in these fields, the IMechE and NAFEMS have established a new student competition.
The award is aimed at those studying an undergraduate degree accredited by the IMechE, who are completing a project that involves the use of engineering simulation techniques such as finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics or multi-body dynamics.
