The Railway Touring Company’s 2018 heritage rail tour programme is packed with steam day trips featuring many of Britain’s best preserved steam locomotives, as well as longer UK steam tours and worldwide heritage rail-based holidays.  You can use its special IMechE members’ discount codes when booking for savings of up to £50pp.

New steam journeys include The Whitby Flyer, with time to explore the seaside town of Whitby, famous for its 199 steps, abbey and quaint streets, and The Oxford Explorer providing an opportunity to visit this beautiful ‘City of Dreaming Spires’.

Popular summer seaside steam excursions continue with trip series The Royal Duchy to Plymouth and Par, The Dorset Coast Express to Bournemouth and Weymouth and The West Somerset Steam Express to Minehead.

50th Anniversary of the End of Steam

The Railway Touring Company also has steam journeys marking this 50th year since the end of passenger steam haulage on British Railways on 11th August 1968.  On Saturday, 11th August, 2018 you can take The Cumbrian Mountain Express or The Waverley.  Also, on Monday, 9th July, The End of Southern Steam to Weymouth marks the anniversary of the last southern steam service a year earlier.

Heritage rail tours

The Great Britain, a fascinating nine day steam tour travelling the length and breadth of Britain and involving around nine different classic British steam locomotives, is once again the highlight of The Railway Touring Company’s year.  Exploring picturesque valleys, mountainous landscapes and all the glories of the British coast, lakes and countryside The Great Britain is the rail journey of a lifetime.

The tour programme also includes The Cock O’the North, which visits the north of Scotland in all its splendour with steam travel on the Strathspey Railway and The Jacobite across the famous Glenfinnan viaduct, as well as a trip by vintage diesel rail car on the Keith and Dufftown Railway and a train journey from Inverness to the Kyle of Lochalsh, voted one of the most scenic lines in Britain

Other tour itineraries will explore other Scottish routes, the West Country, Snowdonia and the Northern Fells.
