Business Development Manager
Thameswey, South Wales and Western
Alan joined the Institution of Mechanical Engineers as a Business Development Executive in 2004. With a background in both engineering and business, he brings a knowledgeable blend of skills and experience to the role.
His father, both an engineer and joint owner of an engineering firm, introduced Alan to engineering at an early age. Alan then combined his fascination for the subject with an interest in business at university, studying for a degree in Business Studies followed by a masters in International Business, which included writing a thesis on ‘Mass Customisation in Engineering’.
Since graduating from university, Alan has enjoyed several roles within the engineering and technology sectors. These include leading environmental testing on DAT Tape systems for Hewlett Packard, and working as an Account Director for Strategic Alliance International PR across the company’s various international communications campaigns for technology clients including PricewaterhouseCoopers, Canoga Perkins and Overland.
In his role as Business Development Manager, Alan manages a team of two to maintain key relationships with major employers and universities in order to support the engineering community. This involves introducing potential new members to the Institution, from students and apprentices to engineers at all stages of their career, and promoting the benefits of professional registration through tailor-made in-house workshops, group presentations, seminars and events.
He advises individuals and companies on the most appropriate programmes to support the development of their engineers and takes candidates through the application process, from drafting a submission to preparing for interview. He also offers strategic guidance to active members via the regional committees and manages the Armed Forces programme.
