Rob Smith’s career started with a time-served apprenticeship at Babcock-Bristol Ltd, where he rose to Senior Systems Engineer, specialising in power plant control and instrumentation systems. This multi-discipline involvement of control systems engineering led to his life-long involvement in power plant systems engineering. Following his apprenticeship, Rob was encouraged to join the Institution as a Student member and this provided the stimulus to further his education and ultimately become a Chartered Engineer.
Subsequently Rob moved to NEI, later part of the Rolls-Royce group, where he held several management positions culminating as Chief Engineer, ADGT Combined Cycle Development.
Until April 2016, he was Energy Applications Manager at Linde Gas, a global industrial gases company, with responsibility for the techno-economic development and implementation of co-generation, utility and clean energy schemes. He is now an independent consultant.
Rob has had a long involvement with the IMechE at both regional and national level. He served on the NE Branch committee from 1987-1997, culminating as Vice-Chairman (before leaving the region to join Linde). At national level, he has served on Council twice and between 2013-2016 was a Vice-President and Chair, Qualifications & Membership Board. In May 2017 he was elected as a Vice-President again. Rob is also the Institution’s representative on the Board of the Engineering Council where he also chairs the Professional Development Strategy Group.
