Climate Change and Sustainability Statement 2026

The IMechE Technical Strategy Board tasked their policy panel on climate change and sustainability with drafting a statement on behalf of the Institution that outlines our principles and positions on this critical topic.

This report outlines what we believe the role of the IMechE, and the wider engineering community, should be in addressing challenges related to climate change and sustainability, including (but not limited to):

  • Providing comprehensive, objective and balanced coverage of low carbon technology, with particular reference to their technology readiness level and the market opportunities created, drawing attention to critical topics
  • Generating environmental data that can be used to record, track, and assess the environmental performance of various solutions. This data can be used internally within organisations to monitor and improve sustainability practices. Additionally, it can be leveraged for external reporting purposes, ensuring compliance with relevant reporting frameworks and regulations.
  • Working alongside the Engineering Council to develop the education, skills and qualifications needed to underpin sustainable practices across engineering industries.
A full list and more detail can be found in the report. We welcome feedback from members on the content and will refresh it periodically to make sure it is up-to-date and relevant.
