Institution news
The Institution is proud to announce this year’s winner, Fahim Islam Anik, from Bangladesh representing South Asia, and runner up Callum Wilson, representing the UK and Ireland for their innovative and impassioned presentations.
Fahim, whose winning presentation detailed the development of a smart walking stick, has enjoyed every aspect of the competition; the experience could not have been more valuable to him.
“SOfE for me has been a journey of learning and growth, allowing me to present myself and my idea, and also helping me connect with lots of brilliant minds. Winning this means a lot. This is the first time anyone from the South Asian region won this title, so that makes it extra special.”
For Head Judge Terry Spall, it was an honour to play such a pivotal role in this year’s competition.
“This was the first time I’ve had the chance to be actively involved in the awards since I was a SOfE competitor myself in 1985”, he said. “I was really blown away by the high standards of the finalists this year; it was a nightmare to judge such closely matched competitors. My sincere congratulations to all of the finalists; you have once again raised the bar and set a new benchmark for the competition.”
Callum was proud to have made it to the Global Final, which gave him the opportunity to speak about his passions within the field of Artificial Intelligence.
“At each stage there have been many other excellent competitors with very interesting presentations which have been a pleasure to watch. I hope my presentation motivates people to learn more about how AI is already used in their field, and how it can improve their lives and the lives of others.”
In its 55th year, Speak Out for Engineering shines a light on the brightest young minds which inevitably leads to the discovery of some of the most brilliant and forward-thinking designs and strategies in the industry. If you have a vision you are passionate about, both Fahim and Callum would implore Young Members to find out more about the competition.
“I would encourage all those out there eligible to participate in SOfE to buckle up,” said Fahim. “Get ready for the journey to avail all those opportunities."
