Hydrogen is rapidly emerging as a core technology in the journey to net-zero. This two-day conference will examine the engineering realities of production, distribution, storage and use of hydrogen within transport, industry and power-generation sectors.

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers is delighted to announce that Engineering a Hydrogen Economy 2026 will take place in Birmingham on 29-30 April 2026, offering a forum for engineers, operators, manufacturers, researchers and service providers from across the hydrogen domain to meet, share and learn.

Hydrogen is rapidly emerging as a core technology in the journey to net-zero. This two-day conference will examine the engineering realities of production, distribution, storage and use of hydrogen within transport, industry and power-generation sectors. By bringing together specialists in hydrogen systems, infrastructure, materials, and end-use applications with senior engineering decision-makers and asset owners, IMechE will deliver a platform where practical experience meets strategic vision.

Delegates will hear from engineers, end-users, manufacturers and service providers presenting peer-reviewed case studies from recent hydrogen projects. These contributions will cover technical challenges, lessons-learned, performance improvements and safety aspects, enabling attendees to benchmark their organisation’s approach, draw insight and apply best practice in their own operations. Prospective presenters are invited to raise their professional profile within this prestigious engineering community by sharing their work by 12 December 2025.

Professionals from across the hydrogen challenge spectrum — whether involved in hydrogen production systems, hydrogen transport and storage assets, or deploying hydrogen in heavy transport, maritime, aviation, industrial or power-generation settings — will find the conference immediately relevant. Equally, senior engineering leaders responsible for infrastructure investment, operational delivery, supply-chain decisions and off-take relationships will gain access to the peer-group conversations essential to hydrogen commercialisation.

Networking is integral to the conference experience. Attendees will benefit from formal and informal opportunities to connect with peers, suppliers and potential collaborators, extending the value of the technical programme into new partnerships and innovation discussions.

"Hydrogen is clearly in our future as alternative green enabler for heating, industry and transport.

This conference really helped to provide an understanding of the work done to try connect production to end user, the road blocks but more importantly how we can collaborate and overcome them.

The question is no longer 'if' hydrogen is part of a greener future, its 'when' and thanks to the tireless efforts of all involved that time frame is getting smaller and smaller.

A brilliant event!"
