Have you been involved in setting up or managing a work experience programme or industrial placement? Would you be interested in sharing your knowledge and experience with a focused hybrid task & finish group?
The engineering skills shortages in the UK economy persist and industry strives for a locally sustainable workforce. Barriers persist along the education pipeline which result in too many young people not having the access to the teachers or facilities they deserve. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic led to severe disruption of work experience opportunities and careers provision.
Inspiring, informing, supporting and influencing underpin IMechE’s education and skills strategy and providing access to work experience is central if we are to increase the number of young people entering the profession.
Chief Executive Alice Bunn said:
“Many young people are unaware of the fantastic potential and variety of careers across engineering or the opportunities available to them. We are proposing to develop a dedicated matchmaking service to link young people with physical work experience opportunities in industry.”
IMechE is recruiting members to join its Work Experience Task & Finish group. The Group will develop a feasibility study for a dedicated IMechE work experience platform linking Year 10-13 students with existing physical work experience opportunities and inform Phase 2 of the virtual work experience programme. We are calling on our members to inform, share their insight and experience to ensure that we are attracting and retaining the engineers of tomorrow.
To apply, please send a short expression of interest (max. 400 words) by 19 December 2022 outlining your experience and why you are interested in participating to essb@imeche.org.
