The world's brightest young engineers went head-to-head last week at the Speak Out for Engineering (SOfE) Global Final.

We welcomed regional champions from across the world to compete for the 2024 title and it was Nicole Pellizzon who rose to the top.

Representing the Europe Region, Nicole, a Doctoral student at the Technical University of Denmark, impressed the judges with a sophisticated presentation on tomographic volumetric additive manufacturing.

Showcasing how this pioneering approach could enable first-time-right 3D prints and reshape the future of manufacturing, Nicole earned the title of SOfE Global Winner 2024.

This year's competition in action

Finalists from across the globe delivered compelling 20-minute presentations followed by a Q&A session with judges and a live audience.

Our runner-up spot went to Thomas Fisher, representing the Oceania Region. His engaging presentation on advancing custom carbon fibre bicycle design was brought to life when he unveiled the very bicycle he had designed and built, travelling with it all the way from Australia.

Speak Out for Engineering legacy

First launched in 1964, SOfE is the Institution's longest-running competition and a true international platform for engineers. Now in its 61st year, it continues to challenge the next generation of engineers to communicate complex technical subjects with precision. With nine global regions competing, SOfE remains a prestigious benchmark for engineering communication.

Next year's heats underway

The momentum is building for 2025. Regional heats are underway, with champions already emerging:
  • In Nigeria, Ikebudu Emmanuel Ikechukwu impressed with his work on adapting piezo technology for electricity generation in West Africa.
  • In Brunei, Abul Khair Bin Idris from Politeknik Brunei took the crown with his presentation on digital drawing and development mediums.

The next generation of engineers is stepping forward, and we look forward to another year of inspiring ideas, innovative thinking and world-class communication.
