HQ Programme overview

Powered by our purpose, driven by your support.

A decision for our members, in the best interests of the Institution.

The future of our headquarters is one of the most significant decisions in the history of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. It is about more than bricks and mortar; it is an opportunity to reimagine how we serve members, staff and the engineering profession. Trustees are using this moment to shape a modern, inclusive and sustainable hub that honours our heritage while supporting the Institution for generations to come.

Member ballot outcome

The member ballot on the resolution recommended by the Trustees concerning the future of the Institution’s London headquarters closed at 14:00 GMT on Friday 19 December 2025.

The ballot followed a Special Meeting of members held on 5 December 2025, at which members were asked to vote on a resolution under By-law 70. The resolution sought member authorisation for the Trustee Board to take the necessary steps to sell the freehold and leasehold properties that together comprise the Institution’s London headquarters.

Result

Turnout: 9,208

Votes for: 6,197

Votes against: 2,687

Abstentions: 324

When abstentions are discounted, 69.8% of members voting supported the resolution, exceeding the two-thirds majority required by the By-laws. The resolution has therefore been approved.

Next phase of the programme

Trustees are now planning the next phase of work. This will include setting out a high-level plan and indicative timescales, and ensuring the right resourcing, governance and funding are in place to support robust decision-making and effective engagement.

We appreciate the time, thought and care members have given to engaging with the process. Trustees are committed to continuing constructive engagement across the membership, including with those involved in governance and in advising Trustees. Members will be kept informed and engaged as the programme progresses.

The Trustees' vision for the headquarters

We want to create a headquarters that is accessible, sustainable and inspiring, a place where today’s and tomorrow’s engineering community and innovators feel at home.

A headquarters that embodies resilience, relevance and member focus, ensuring we continue to inspire and empower the engineering community worldwide.
