The Headquarters Programme was established to address long-standing issues with the Institution’s headquarters building, which has served members since 1899. The building now requires significant investment to meet modern standards, with risks including structural deterioration, outdated infrastructure, and high operating costs. Without action, the Institution faces growing financial strain and the potential diversion of funds from its core charitable purpose.
Building on more than a decade of work by member-led groups, the Programme draws on valuable insights, analysis, and recommendations that led to the formation of the HQ Sponsor Board (HQSB) in 2024. HQSB is responsible for developing a robust business case, evaluating all viable options, and leading a transparent, structured decision-making process, concluding with a final preferred option.
The team has engaged extensively with members through Board and Committee meetings and all-member webinars; consulted with other Professional Engineering Institutions (PEIs), with independent professional advisors and 3 gateway reviews at critical points of the programme, to ensure rigorous analysis is aligned with best practice.
The Programme is robust, transparent, evidence-based, and aligned with the IMechE’s Purpose and Strategy, working to secure a long-term, sustainable solution for the benefit of members and the Institution.
