Summary

Understand how to apply sustainable design considerations for projects, production and supply chains within systems.

New Product Introduction (NPI) classically needs to deliver an agreed product specification on time, to cost and quality. Now however, NPI must also consider sustainability from initial concept through to development for the subsequent user phase.

This course presents and explains the sustainable NPI approaches necessary for product development, life extension and renewability - including benefits of flexible product platforms and module base engineering. This includes practical considerations such as how design teams should work together, producing multiple products from one design, realisation of economies of scale, lean manufacturing and reducing C02.

Who should attend?

  • Engineering leaders
  • Project managers
  • People working in supply chain
  • Product design engineers
  • Production engineers

How will I benefit?

  • Be able to identify sustainability factors of the ‘system’ in which the product is manufactured and used.
  • Understand the hierarchy of waste for New Product Introduction and existing production/supply chain systems and be able to better identify, quantify and minimise waste.
  • Plan how and where to focus engineering resources during a “sustainable life-cycle”.
  • Be able to apply lean manufacturing principles and Design for “X” guidelines that relate and compliment to sustainable future designs.
  • Explain the importance of “quality assurance in a sustainable business”.
  • Apply design considerations for end of life (reuse, recycle, repurpose , disposal… etc).
  • Know the basic principles of ‘block-chain’ authentication for supply chain sustainability.
Contributes 7 CPD hours

Key topics

  • Product and production system development (a simultaneous engineering approach)
  • Avoid the traps to ensure that there is a systematic ‘lessons learned’ feedback approach
  • Engineering for multiple products derivatives (a product portfolio) – a one platform approach
  • Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA), and how it can be extended to other areas which effect sustainability.
  • Product process standards and modular architecture: Time for evolution ‘vs’ revolution

To get the most out of this course, you should first begin to understand how to assess your sustainability practices to produce a robust business case. You can do so by booking this course alongside Re-engineering for a circular economy which covers this.
