Summary

We have designed this programme for managers and experienced engineers working with mentees or supporting professional registration applicants.

Providing opportunities for new engineers to develop capabilities and learn from senior colleagues is vital in creating an environment that is both engaging and motivating. This requires high-quality, effective mentoring relationships that support engineers on their journey from new starters to independent professionals taking ownership for their on-going development.

We have tailored this blended learning programme to help you develop your mentoring skills and recognise how you can best use your experience and knowledge in supporting the development of others.

You will gain clarity of how to set up and maintain an effective mentoring relationship, develop effective mentoring skills and learn to recognise some barriers to great mentoring.

"I was nervous that the training would involve role play, something that I often find awkward and artificial in a training environment. But that didn’t happen, thankfully… It was more practising some of the skills and the exercises were well balanced. I found being on the course allowed me to take a step back and reflect. A lot of what we touched on is transferrable to other scenarios."

Who should attend?

This programme is designed for managers and experienced engineers supporting mentees. Where the mentees are professional registration applicants, the programme is ideal to be attended alongside our Mentoring for MPDS programme.

How will I benefit?

After the course you will be able to:

  • Understand how adults learn, including your own learning preferences, and how this might impact on the mentoring relationship
  • Recognise the benefits and difference between mentoring and coaching
  • Gain clarity on the importance of a structured approach to a mentoring relationship
  • Gain insight into how to build an effective mentoring relationship
  • Develop key coaching and mentoring skills including listening, questioning, empathy and giving feedback
  • Build greater awareness of how to create effective development plans that consider individual learning preferences
  • Consider some of the ethical boundaries and barriers to really great mentoring
  • Develop the habit of self-reflection practice to enhance your skills as a mentor
Contributes 7 CPD hours

The course works very well in conjunction with the MPDS course held the day before. Highly recommended, small number of 6 worked well and good balance of interaction/group work and presentations.
