Summary

Understand traditional and modern industrial electrical systems, approaches to their maintenance, and the principles of fault finding, diagnostics and repair. This course can help reduce this impact on the business by helping to restore operational systems in the most time efficient and cost-effective manner.

Approximately 80% of plant downtime is related to equipment failure. Most stoppages aren't caused by complex electronic systems and devices, but by mechanically biased electrical components such as motors, contactors, cabling, relays and sensors.

Mechanical engineers often lack the confidence or knowledge required to identify and fix faults in these components resulting in more downtime whilst waiting for external assistance from electricians to be sourced.

This course provides you with the knowledge and understanding of industrial electrical systems, approaches to their maintenance, and the principles of fault finding, diagnostics and repair. The course will cover fault finding techniques that can be applied to more traditional components as well as introducing more modern technology including Variable Speed Drives (VSD) and servo drives.

It will also cover the core safety requirements for ensuring that plant and equipment worked upon is safe to be returned to service and functions correctly. This course will enable engineering professionals to improve productivity and efficiency of plant operations by increasing speed of response to issues encountered to reduce downtime due to faults in electrical components.

Who should attend?

Electrical, mechanical, and mechatronics biased engineers and technicians.

This course is also suitable for people looking to develop a wider understanding of different fault-finding techniques and principles of inverter and servo driven systems.

How will I benefit?

  • Understand how electrical systems work within a modern industrial application.

  • Identify potential fault-finding considerations and use of system error codes to identify potential problems.
  • Apply safety isolation process (LOTO).
  • Use key electrical testing processes to verify operational status of key components.
  • Effectively carry out testing on electrical motors.
  • Verify Earth systems and ensure safety requirements are met to return systems back to operational status.
  • Understand the core principles of VSD (inverter) and servo driven systems.
  • Understand differences between the different motors used within the different system applications.
  • Help improve productivity and reduce associated downtime and relevant costs.
  • Get better understanding of technical language used to communicate to relevant technical support staff including equipment manufacturers.

  • Understanding and use of testing methods within the industrial maintenance environment.
  • Verification of electrical motors for diagnostic method.
  • Verification of equipment to confirm relevant safety compliance has been achieved.
  • Principles of the different motor configuration used within invertor driven and servo-based systems.
  • Different operational principles between invertor and servo systems
  • Operational differences between closed and open loop systems used within the different systems.
  • Application of safe isolation and the additional risks of stored energy.
