Voice of the Profession 2011

This report reviews our communications and political activities in 2011.

We want to ensure mechanical engineers are given a voice. Providing informed comment on breaking news, working with the government and offering insight through its reports and events, are some of the most effective ways to demonstrate to the public the vital role mechanical engineers fulfil in society.

Engineering insight

We can help ensure media coverage is informed and accurate.
In March, when the world was grappling to find out about events at the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant, we were quick to offer our perspective, leading to appearances on BBC News, Sky and a raft of quality national papers. Journalists also turned to us for informed comment when volcanic ash once again spread over the UK in May, with appearances on Sky News, BBC Radio and in national newspapers such as the Daily Mail.

Leading the debate

We provide much more than just talking heads during breaking news. Our 2011 reports on population, aerospace, manufacturing and energy in Scotland have promoted vital industries, sparked debate and shaped government policy. Our reports and prestige events have put the Institution’s name in publications from The Sun and the Financial Times to international publications such as the New York Times. Media coverage for 2011’s Formula Student event and for Manufacturing Excellence was higher than ever before.

We want to help people from all walks of life understand the importance of mechanical engineering, to encourage young people to aspire to become engineers, and to enable engineers to be celebrated in society as much as the early pioneers. We also want members to feel that we give them a voice. In 2011, the Institution achieved record media coverage, helping to ensure more readers and viewers than ever know about the vital work of its members.
