Reskilling in Engineering

Roundtable summary

IMechE and the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) convened an expert roundtable to address the increasingly important issue of reskilling in our profession. They have produced a joint report on the discussion, including key recommendations for government.

Held at One Birdcage Walk, the event was co-hosted by both institutions’ 2024/25 presidents, Dr Clive Hickman OBE and Mark Apsey MBE.

Key themes included supporting SMEs, simplifying the apprenticeship and CPD landscape, and addressing the fact that the way people learn today is different from 20 years ago. Following the Industrial Strategy, we reiterate our call for the government to work with industry and academia on producing a National Engineering and Technology Workforce Strategy.

This topic is an ongoing priority area for both institutions, and we welcome any feedback or proposals for future engagement.
