Guide

Leading the Change

In our guide Leading the Change, we set out our comprehensive approach to addressing the engineering skills gap and inspiring the next generation of engineers.

In this guide we looks at how we need to broaden our approach to encompass all groups of young people, not just those already passionate about STEM subjects.

We call for more engineering opportunities in schools. We believe that by working together to get children immersed in STEM subjects from an early age, we can lay the foundations for a lifelong passion for engineering, particularly with those who wouldn’t otherwise have considered pursuing it.

We also detail how we are already working to enthuse young people in a number of different ways, including through large national events or one-on-one support. These activities include our sponsorship of the Bloodhound SSC project and the Big Bang Fair. We also look at the important role our scholarships and awards are playing in assisting students as they undertake mechanical engineering degrees and apprenticeships.

High-quality careers advice

We also set out how we support students by providing high-quality and targeted careers advice and encourage professional engineers to inspire future engineers by stepping into volunteer roles to deliver STEM engagement activities.

We also look at how we work with educators through schemes such as the Teacher Industrial Partners’ Scheme (TIPS) to help bring the world of industry into the classroom.

In Leading the change we also set out how our cutting-edge thought leadership including the Five Tribes: Personalising Engineering Education report, alongside our work to lobby government for change underpin our entire approach to improving the world through engineering and ultimately, help encourage the UK public to share our vision.
