the Press Office

The Institution of Mechanical Engineers is expanding its Manufacturing Excellence business improvement programme with a nationwide launch on March 17.

Companies that want to take part in the awards will have until Friday 9 May to use the online tool which offers free, immediate and targeted business advice in response to a self-assessment audit.

Dr Colin Brown, Director of Engineering at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, said:

“After successfully piloting regional awards in the Midlands and Yorkshire/North East England, it is exciting to be able to now offer the Manufacturing Excellence Awards to the whole of the UK.

“As well as potentially winning, taking part gives companies the opportunity to receive valuable advice, free of charge, from world class experts. In a time of fierce competition in business, the feedback provided through the Manufacturing Excellence Awards could make the difference between a company’s success and failure.

“The easy to use online assessment tool is available for just seven weeks from March 17.”

Chris Rea, Managing Director of AESSEAL, the Overall winning company for the 2011 Manufacturing Excellence Awards said:

“Our business engaged in a benchmarking exercise with the Manufacturing Excellence Awards, which became an important part of our ‘Excellence Programme’ and we grew from £31 million to £124 million sales over a 10 year period.

“I can therefore heartily recommend the Manufacturing Excellence Awards as an opportunity to learn more about business improvement opportunities and to grow and develop your business too.”

In September 2013 two regional Manufacturing Excellence Awards were launched. Later on today, Friday 14 March, the winner for the Yorkshire/North East Award will be announced at a celebration in Sheffield. The shortlisted companies are Airedale Springs, Agfa Graphics and Cummins. On Friday 21 March the winner of the West Midlands Award will be announced in Birmingham. The shortlisted companies for that award are Bridgnorth Aluminium, Building Adhesives and ZF Lemforder.

The Manufacturing Excellence Awards have been helping UK manufacturing companies improve for over 30 years. This year marks the launch of a new, streamlined process aimed at easing the path to gaining individually tailored expert advice.

The six steps are:

1)    Register at: http://www.imeche.org/manufacturingexcellence and complete the company and financial profiles

2)   Complete the online questionnaire, providing evidence for the answers you have selected

3)   Receive instant personalised feedback for your business

4)   Short-listed companies receive a panel assessment visit to select the finalists

5)   Finalists make a presentation at The Institution of Mechanical Engineers in London to an elite panel of judges

6)   The National Manufacturing Excellence Awards Ceremony, where the winners are announced, will take place on Tuesday 30 September at WMG, part of Warwick University
