Youth seminar: get to know the applications of 3D printing in Malaysia ​

IMechE Malaysia Young Members’ Section and the University of Malaya IMechE Student Chapter co-organised a seminar, "Youth Seminar: Get To Know The Applications of 3D Printing in Malaysia", on 22 September 2018.

The objective was to create awareness about the the up and coming additive manufacturing (3D printing) technology in the Malaysian landscape.

The invited speakers from different backgrounds of the additive manufacturing field in Malaysia were able to discuss a wide array of additive manufacturing applications ranging from medical prosthesis for humans and animals to aircraft industries and other businesses. This inaugural youth seminar aimed to benefit fellow Student Affiliate members to gain more insights about the market opportunities available in Malaysia. The first of its kind since the inception of the YMS IMeche Malaysia, the youth seminar received a distinguished response with over 60 attendees from not only University Malaya but also from other universities in Malaysia, namely UniTEN, INTI International University, UCSI University, SEGI University and KDU University College.

The seminar kicked-off with an opening speech by Achugovind Kumar, YMS Chairman of IMechE Malaysia 2018/19. As the lead organiser, he explained how he conceived the idea to organise this youth seminar and utilised the IMechE’s network of engineers to identify and invite the esteemed speakers.

The first speaker of the Youth Seminar was Mr. Darween Reza bin Sabri, CEO of MyCRO Sdn. Bhd. He is also an alumnus of University of Malaya. In his presentation, he explained about the 3D printing technology and workshops he organises to promote 3D printing.

The second speaker was Mr. Paul Siew, founding member of 3DxL. In his presentation, he explained about the various materials used for 3D printing and the real life application examples of his product, which includes a 3D printed replica of classic car part which was difficult to be sourced by his customer. He also impressed the audience with the 3D printers he brought to the seminar which was printing figurines throughout the whole seminar. It was good attraction for the audience during the break time.

The third speaker was Ms Woo San San, Managing Director of Materialise Malaysia. In her presentation, she explained Materialise’s role in pioneering in the 3D printing technology and their involvement in various sectors, e.g. vision-centric spectacle frames, prosthesis and footwear insoles.She offered internship and C++ bootcamp to students who were interested.

The final speaker for the seminar was Dr. Praveena Nair, a Lecturer and Researcher in Biomimicry and 3D Printing. She is also an alumnus of University of Malaya. In her emotional speech, she explained how 3D printing could be utilised for animal prosthesis and her intentions to do a research project on the topic. She pitched her research idea in an intention to recruit potential Masters or Phd candidates. The final presentation was follow with certificate presentations to distinguished speakers and organising committee. The event then concluded with a group photo  and lunch with all participants of this seminar.

The IMechE YMS Malaysia Chairman, Mr Achugovind  Kumar would like to thank the IMechE YMS Committee Member which includes Ng Kun Yong, Joel Bharath, Shashitharan, Dr Steven Loh, Dr Hooman, Shieela for providing support for organising the seminar indirectly. He also would like to thank Univeristy of Malaya IMechE Student Chapter Committee, Lui Wan Ying, Soo Yih Ying, Yu Zhi Xian, Wang Mei Sing, Darshan Nilesh Kumar, Low Junbin, Muhammad Hanif, Kang Pin Jen, Lee Yi Dong and Si Jia Chu for their endless cooperation to ensure the success of the event.
