Siemens will manufacture the turbines at its new Hull factory

The world's largest offshore wind farm is to be built off the coast of Hornsea, in the UK, after developer DONG Energy’s board made its final investment decision.

The 157sq mile wind farm will have a capacity of 1.2GW and be able to power more than one million homes.

The 7.0MW turbines will be manufactured by Siemens at its newly-built Hull factory.

Brent Cheshire, DONG Energy’s UK country chairman, said: “Our decision to construct this giant wind farm underlines our commitment to the UK market. Hornsea Project One will support the supply chain and help create local jobs.

“To have the world’s biggest ever offshore wind farm located off the Yorkshire coast is hugely significant, and highlights the vital role offshore wind will play in the UK’s need for new low-carbon energy.”

Energy secretary Amber Rudd said: "This project means secure, clean energy for the country, jobs and financial security for working people and their families,"

DONG Energy also has the rights to the Hornsea Project Two and Three, which have the potential of further 3GW offshore wind power capacity.
