Far more than a metal strip tease, these are highly engineered metal sections for use today
Cold roll forming metal strip into complex, accurate sections is clever, but nothing new. However, advanced cold roll forming techniques allow previously impossible shapes to be created. It is now possible to vary the wall thickness of the metal strip over the cross section, allowing selective strengthening or lightening of the metal section. It is also possible to alter the height, width and depth of the section along its length, and even to create branches from the parent cross section, leading to highly accurate, futuristic forms.
Flowing metal around the cross section, thickening areas that have load or stiffness requirements and forming metal branches, all at room temperature, not only offers benefits in terms of the actual form and weight of the cross section, but also in terms of the resultant metal properties. The formed metal becomes stronger, surface hardness increases and the surface roughness decreases.
These advanced metal sections offer significant advantages to those consistently looking to incorporate enhancements into their own product offerings. Even without these new techniques, rolled metal sections, or metal profiles as they are sometimes called, offer an extremely economic method of achieving high volume parts with consistently high tolerances.
But how often are roll formed parts even considered, outside the basic shapes used in UK construction? Roll forming offers an alternative to costly fabrication and is an excellent way to improve on those extrusion tolerances you are having to live with. It is not just steel that can benefit from this technology, aluminium and a range of non-ferrous metals can also be roll formed. A huge variety of ideas and applications for rolled metal sections can be found at www.welser.com/en.
Welser don’t need to tease about what may become possible with metal strip, Welser’s futuristic metal sections are already here, enhanced by Welser’s design support service to ensure your metal section is optimised for you. In addition to producing your exact section, Welser can also offer to integrate a surprising number of features into it, reducing your production times by creating ‘plug & play’ sections, already containing the slots, holes, embosses, bends, welds, cuts, rivets or threads you need.
