Virtual Library develops new features

Institution News Team

The Institution’s information and library service has new resources available and is planning further enhancements in 2015.

The Institution’s Virtual Library had a record year in 2014, with over 300,000 people using the service.

The service continues to develop and members now have access to the McGraw Hill Access Engineering database and Mintel’s industrial and engineering market research reports.

New McGraw Hill Access Engineering
The database encompasses renowned engineering handbooks such as: Roark’s formulas of stress and strain, Perry’s chemical engineering handbook, Mark’s mechanical engineering reference book and Juran’s Quality Handbook.

In addition, it offers interactive calculators, enabling you to determine, for example, the incompressible flow in pipes and channels.

There are study guides for students and tutors, including selected materials on core topics such as strength of materials, and thermodynamics.

Library users can read the content online, and by registering for a free personal account they will be able to download and print chapters. There is a concurrent user limit on the database, so at times users may need to wait before accessing the content.

Market research from Mintel
Members can now access a collection of Mintel's UK Industrial Market Research Reports in the categories of business engineering, business utilities and energy.

Mintel is well known as one of the leading market intelligence publishers. Library users can download the latest reports for free, with titles ranging from: ‘Consulting Engineers’ and ‘Industrial Fasteners’ to 'Renewable Energy’.

Each report examines the market trends, market drivers, leading industry activity, market forecasts and major company profiles for the sectors. This information can help library users highlight changes in markets, support informed decisions and keep track of innovations and companies.

The addition of these new resources means that members now have free access to over 31,197 ebook titles and 9,169 journal titles, including all the leading engineering publishers.

Further enhancements in 2015
The next big change planned for the Virtual Library this year is the development of a single search engine, which will enable library users to search across all the content available, greatly enhancing the usability of the service.

The library is currently offering trial access to Springer Materials, which details over 3000 physical and chemical properties of over 250,000 materials.

Log into the Virtual Library to try out these new resources.
