Soldier’s workhorse could ease the burden

The new autonomous vehicle developed by BAE Systems that could one day ease the burdens of soldiers on the battlefield by transporting equipment in theatre has been unveiled.

The multi-operated all-terrain vehicle (MOATV) can be driven like an ordinary vehicle or operated by remote control and instructed semi-autonomously to follow or go to a soldier operating a personal digital assistant.

It was developed to carry soldiers’ backpacks. British soldiers can haul more than 70kg of equipment and protection during operations, limiting mobility.

The vehicle incorporates collision detection and avoidance systems. The technology used on the vehicle could be applied to other military transport equipment, BAE said.

Andy Wright, BAE’s director technology acquisition, said: “The MOATV can do far more than simply carry loads – it can also be used for evacuating casualties in high-risky environments, supplying ammunition, patrolling perimeters and vehicle convoys, and land reconnaissance.”
