The Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) qualification and EESG member survey

Energy, Environment and Sustainability Group (EESG)

We are seeking your input to assess the level of interest in the CEnv qualification among members who work in the field of sustainability, and we hope you can complete the following poll:

CEnv is the Chartered Environmentalist qualification. Like Chartered Engineer, CEng, it’s a masters-equivalent professional qualification, and demonstrates a sound knowledge, proven experience and a profound commitment to sustainable best practice within their particular profession and field of expertise.

As a subscriber to the Energy Environment and Sustainability newsletter, you may be working to apply sustainability and environmental knowledge in your field, and you may already meet some or all of the eligibility criteria for the CEnv qualification. If you aren’t already CEnv we’d like to know if you’d be interested in registering, based on the benefits and costs outlined below, and we request that all Institution members interested in sustainability answer the 5 questions in this poll – even if you are not currently eligible for CEnv.

Survey Question:

1:           Are you already registered as a Chartered Environmentalist / CEnv, either with the Institution or another body?

2:           If you're not already a CEnv, do you fulfil the eligibility criteria (listed below)?

3:           Whether or not you are eligible already, would you be likely to consider registering within the next 6-12 months?

4:           Would your registration and subscription fees be paid by you or by your employer?

5:           If you are not already CEnv, do you think it could enhance your professional development, your professional credibility, and/or your ability to achieve promotion or to win clients? Tick all that apply.

6:           Is there anything else you'd like to say about CEnv?

You can answer these questions online or, if you prefer, send answers by email. If we get a good response, we will be able to notify you about the date when new applications can be accepted, and we’ll provide details of the application process to confirm your eligibility.

Benefits of CEnv

The qualification CEnv is, like CEng, a demonstration of your ability, in the specific field of environment and sustainability.  The qualification will serve to show that you are qualified to operate as a professional engineer in these increasingly important areas of challenge and endeavour.

The key benefits of securing the qualification for yourself include the following:

  • It’s a Masters-level qualification that demonstrates your expertise in sustainability at this level, in addition to your existing engineering qualification.
  • It increases your professional credibility.
  • It’s a valuable part of your Continuing Professional Development
  • It supports career progression and/or promotion.
  • It can help to win new work and new clients.
  • All registrants can be listed at no additional cost in the online directory
  • SocEnv hosts about 6 professional networking events around the UK each year, free to CEnv registrants.

Costs of CEnv

There’s a one-off cost for registering as a Chartered Environmentalist, and an annual subscription.

Registration cost is payable once only and includes the first year’s subscription                      = £150
(compare  to Institution charges for initial Member or CEng application,  £115 or £80 online, and Fellow = £165)

Subscription cost is payable annually = £38 + £10 admin charge                                                 = £48
(compare to CEng subscription = £43.50)

Eligibility Criteria for Chartered Environmentalist

There are three key steps to achieving eligibility for Chartered Environmentalist status; membership of a licenced body (including the Institution), knowledge and experience, and key competences.

Download the Chartered Environmentalist Specification.

Step 1:  Professional Affiliation

To be eligible you must be a professionally qualified member, or equivalent, of the Institution. This means you will be MIMechE and either CEng or IEng, and therefore you are already subject to the Institution's Code of Conduct and disciplinary procedure.

Step 2: Eligibility - Knowledge & Experience

You will have a relevant masters level degree or equivalent level of knowledge.  The equivalent level of knowledge will be determined by the Institution, and relates especially to competences in groups A and B, below.

Demonstrate sufficient, relevant and responsible practical experience to be able to satisfy the CEnv Competences.  Ordinarily, this would be four or more years work with a direct and distinct environmental focus and/or context, and may be paid work, volunteer in nature or academic work placement or research, but not academic study.  The sufficiency of experience will be determined by the Institution.

Step 3: Competence & Code of Ethics

To be eligible, you will be able to demonstrate four groups of competences

A            Application of knowledge and understanding of the environment to further the aims of sustainability

B            Leading Sustainable Management of the Environment

C            Effective communication and interpersonal skills

D           Personal commitment to professional standards, recognising obligations to society, the profession and the environment

Finally you will agree to comply with the Society’s Code of Conduct and with the CPD requirements of the Institution.

We’d really like to know how many of our subscribers would find this qualification interesting, and we thank you in advance for completing the poll
