The Big Energy Debate

Institution News Team

The term ‘energy trilemma’ illustrates the balance between energy security, social impact and environmental sensitivity, although the public may be unaware of the phrase or the issues.

The Guardian newspaper has teamed up with partners in the energy sector to lead ‘The Big Energy Debate’.

Engaging with industry, policy makers and academics a series of debates will form a basis from which to objectively analyse the energy market and provide viable solutions to the ‘energy trilemma’. The Institution of Mechanical Engineers is a strategic partner within this project.

Regarding energy, the most important concern for members of the public is the price they pay. The most important concern for energy companies is the maintenance of a viable business model. And the most important concern for Government is to ‘keep the lights on’ and appease public sentiment.

Energy prices in Britain are high compared those in Europe. On current estimates, the UK’s ability to grow the energy sector will not meet future demand; and there is an urgent need for greater stability in the country’s energy supply to protect industry and consumers.

The first Westminster round table event, held in April, was well attended, and was debated objectively by politicians from all parties and both Houses. The second debate, held in Bristol on 21 May, considered many of the innovative energy projects associated with the West of England’s drive for energy sustainability.

Engineers are intrinsic to the sustainable supply of energy across the world. Members of the Institution are encouraged to get involved and express their views and expertise. The next Government, of 2015-2020, has the opportunity to lay the groundwork for a cross-party long term energy plan to last beyond the electoral cycle. It is hoped that a solution to some of the UK’s ‘energy trilemma’ problems might emanate from this initiative. It remains to be seen whether those solutions are palatable to any of the stakeholders: consumers, energy suppliers or Government.
