Terex celebrates Apprenticeship Scheme success

Institution News Team

Global industrial manufacturer, Terex's Apprenticeship Scheme, a significant part of the company's plans to train and develop, and retain skilled workers, has been accredited by the Institution.

Terex MP is a global industrial manufacturer, and in Coalville, Leicestershire they design and manufacture machinery for recycling and quarrying. In common with many engineering firms, Terex is keen to address the engineering skills gap.

In both the UK and Northern Ireland, it has been working with the Institution for many years to develop engineers to meet the needs of their business. Their Apprenticeship Scheme is a significant part of their plans to train and develop, and ultimately retain skilled workers, and has just gained accreditation by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

Zoey Staniforth, HR Manager for Terex, explains their strategy: “We are looking to recruit and retain key talent, and our relationship with the IMechE plays a huge part.

"We operate a number of schemes, supporting our professional engineers in gaining accreditation to Chartered status, as well as providing a mechanism for graduate engineers and those with a few years’ experience to join the MPDS Scheme and work towards Chartered or Incorporated Membership.

"All team members who are interested in this are supported by Farah Baksh from the Institution, as well as by the business.

"As an organisation we believe that this gives us an advantage, and demonstrates our commitment to developing our team members. The new accreditation of our Apprenticeship Scheme, takes us one step further, we are starting at grass roots level and growing our engineers. We recruit talent at an early age, and work with local schools and colleges to get young people interested in engineering, particularly focusing on those groups where interest has been historically lower, for example young women.

"Our intention is to create a highly diverse and skilled workforce for the future and the accreditation of our apprenticeship scheme brings us a step closer to that goal. Moving forward, our apprentices will all be registered with the IMechE, and this framework will be used to develop them into skilled and talented engineers who will ensure the future of our business.”

Farah Baksh, Midlands Business Development Manager for the Institution, praises Terex’s approach: “It is rewarding for the Institution to develop long term relationships with companies, and see them reap the benefits of developing their workforce. At this time, when the Government is keen to expand the number of apprenticeship schemes in manufacturing, Terex is demonstrating the benefits of this approach.”
