Now in its 23rd year, the annual competition is the Institution of Mechanical Engineers’ biggest event and challenges university teams from across the world to design, build and run the best single seater Internal Combustion Engine, Electric, Hybrid and even Autonomous vehicles. Through multiple events, their cars are judged on their acceleration, handling and efficiency, while engineers are assessed for their design, costing, business presentation and, most recently, simulation skills.

Even during a global pandemic, the number and diversity of teams participating this year demonstrates the commitment to strengthening post-grad employment prospects via the real-world experience that only a competition like Formula Student can provide.

Whilst the competition is not immune to the concept of the “new normal”, the Organising Committee is determined that a competition will take place in 2021 and has developed several scenarios, including options for a live event, designed to provide teams with the best possible experience and recognise the hard work of the young engineers who take part in Formula Student.

In particular, moving the Concept Class judging completely online has opened the competition up to universities who would have been previously unable to take part and it’s in this area that there is the greatest increase in electric vehicle development, as teams make the switch from traditional combustion engines.

This year we are delighted to welcome several new teams to the UK competition, including Kafrelsheikh University’s Kafrelsheikh Racing and Canadian International College’s EMIT-CIC Racing and Radix CIC Racing Teams from Egypt, Poseidon Team from University of West Attica in Greece and University of St. Andrews’ Saints Performance Automotive Design from the UK.

Additionally, the FS-AI competition has once again grown in size, with new teams taking up the challenge of autonomous vehicle development including University of Glasgow’s UGRacing, University of Manchester’s Manchester Stinger Motorsport, Arab Academy for Science and Technology’s AAST AI Team and Zurich University of Applied Sciences’ ZHAW Driverless team.

On behalf of the Institution and the Formula Student committee, we wish all teams taking part the best of luck with the competition and look forward to seeing the results of their hard work at the live event this summer.
