New Principal Sponsor
This season TAU Racing were delighted to welcome on board our new Principal Sponsor, Nexen Petroleum U.K. Limited. This sponsorship has provided the team with many new, exciting opportunities - in particular it allows for the development of our new powertrain package. In partnership with Nexen, TAU Racing has purchased a Triumph Daytona 675 bike (photo attached) and now have the engine running off our custom Life Racing ECU.
Engine upgrade to Triumph Daytona 675
In response to feedback TAU Racing received at the 2016 FSUK Design Event, this year the team has strived to design a more innovative powertrain package. Taking advantage of the engine capacity rule change, the team has upgraded from our old Honda CBR600 engine to the Triumph Daytona 675, minimising the geometry of the system whilst maximising torque. Coupled with our new eccentric differential design, the team hold high hopes for TAU-17 to be TAU Racing's most competitive car to date. We have noticed that a few other teams are also using this engine and we are looking forward to talking to them at the competition about their Triumph experiences.
Prototype wet sump 3D printed
For the first time, TAU Racing have trial fitted our student designed wet sump to the engine with use of a 3D printed wet sump. This process was efficient in ensuring that the design would fit our new engine prior to the final machining of the aluminium wet sump (photos of 3D printed and aluminium wet sump attached).
Nosecone developments
Our composites department is making use of new funds for the manufacture of TAU-17's nosecone. This is the first TAU Racing nosecone to be designed using CFD analysis which is a massive step forwards for the team. The nosecone design features a steep angle and a small windshield to direct the flow over the driver's head.
New driver
Finally, the new team wouldn't be complete without a fresh driver. Check out Dolly who took our TAU-16 car for a spin at our latest testing session!
TAU (Team Aberdeen University) Racing was established in 2007 by a group of 10 undergraduate engineers of various disciplines at the University of Aberdeen.
The team now has over 50 team members across a variety of sub-teams, from Chassis and Suspension to Engine and Electronics. The society teaches team members to apply engineering methods to a real life engineering project, allowing the students' designs to be manufactured and used on the car. Furthermore, the project demands many interpersonal skills - including team management, effective communication and scheduling.
The project is solely funded by sponsorship raised by the team, which is crucial to remain present and competitive within the competition. TAU Racing continues to build upon the successes of previous years with the aim of maximising our points awarded at the competition each year.
