Process Safety 2015: An Evolution of Strategies Building on Experience is organised by the Institution with support from the Institution of Chemical Engineers, Cogent Skills and the Energy Institute.
Taking place on 23 June in Manchester, the Process Safety 2015 seminar brings together specialists in the process safety field from organisations such as HSE, Scottish Power, Chevron, UKPIA, ABB Consulting and RWE.
Managing process safety is essential for operating a facility. Averagely low adverse incident rates are an indication, but not a guarantee, of process safety; and control of process operations must be demonstrated.
A decade since two major accidents – in Texas City and in Buncefield, Hertfordshire – this seminar enables delegates to discover how companies are learning from such incidents and embedding the results to boost internal performance.
It emphasises the evolution of strategies in the past decade, and illustrates, through speakers’ direct company experience, the practices and strategies that can enhance a company’s process safety performance. Delegates will:
- Learn the steps that industry has taken post-Texas City and Buncefield.
- Discover how maintenance and human factors impact on process safety.
- Identify the right process safety indicators to minimise future incidents and financial loss.
- Gain updates on the current safety requirements and legislation with HSE.
- Share case studies from cross-industry leaders including RWE, Scottish Power and Chevron.
- Recognise how companies are learning from incidents and embedding the results to boost internal performance.
The timetable includes opportunities to discuss and network with delegates and speakers. During the morning and afternoon, attendees can take part in chaired sessions to put comments and questions to the participants. Delegates may also submit questions in advance of the seminar, by emailing
eventenquiries@imeche.org. See the
full brochure for details of the morning and afternoon content.
The event is organised by the Institution's Process Industries and Pressure Systems groups, and co-chaired by John Wintle, Member, Pressure Systems Group and John Bartlett, Member, Process Industries Division North West.
Anne O’Neal, Global Manager, Operational Excellence and Health, Environment and Safety, Chevron is the keynote speaker. She will be considering the similarities and differences for onshore and offshore process safety practices, including:
- Looking at current onshore and offshore approaches to process safety.
- Understanding the operational environment as a factor of implementing new processes.
- Best practice: can lessons from onshore be transferred to offshore and vice versa?
John Burnett of RWE Generation is a member of the Human and Organisational Factors Committee, Energy Institute, and is well experienced in power station operation and management. As one of the many experts speaking at the seminar, he said: “This is an excellent opportunity to get up to date, both from an industry and professional institution perspective.
"Whilst the application of process safety methodologies is now well established, there are many further improvements that can be made. These include better learning from incidents and the application of human factors performance indicators.”
Further areas covered in the morning and afternoon sessions include:
- HSE’s perspective on key elements of successful process safety management.
- Embedding inherent safety in design – ‘eliminating’ versus ‘managing’ hazards.
- Collection of process safety performance data for downstream petroleum facilities.
- A case study on developing human factors process safety performance indicators at a thermal power generation site.
- Process safety indicators and dashboard systems in the power industry.
- Best practice in learning from incidents, accidents and events.
