IMechE DSU Student Chapter hosted the Speak Out for Engineering (SOfE) 2021 Pakistan Nationals Final on 14 November. Six ardent contestants from different universities that stood victorious in the regional competition were invited to showcase their creative engineering concepts fuelled by utmost enthusiasm and avidity on an even grander scale.

The event officially began with Mr. Sulaymaan, the event's host, giving a brief welcome note on the event's theme which involved discussing the rich history of IMechE and its successful endeavours along with a descriptive note on the event’s theme and progression.

The esteemed judges comprised of:

Mr. Safiullah Ghauri: Who is a Barrister, a Corporate Consultant, Managing Partner, Entrepreneur, Keynote Speaker and in addition to all of that, a Strategic Analyst.

Ms. Hinna Ali: An accountant by profession who has a career spanning over 25 years as an external auditor for KPMG in UAE. She spent fifteen years in Internal Audit function of Emirates and left as an Associate Vice President. She has been a part of Toastmasters since 2007, holding multiple prestigious positions at Emirates Toastmasters Club in Dubai and is now also a member of Karachi Toastmasters Club.

Mr. Ahmed Aftab: Manager at IT Hub Power Services Ltd, also Ex-President of Hub Toastmasters Club and a Motivational and Soft Skills Speaker.

Mr. Saiyid Najam Rizvi: Head Credit Risk & Monitoring Department at Pak Brunei Investment Company, a development finance institution. Currently a member of Kolachi Toastmasters Club and ex-president Karachi Toastmasters Club.

In accordance to SOfE regulations, each participant was expected to submit a 20 minutes pre-recorded presentation prior to the event. During the live event, after the presentation is streamed, the judges are to hold a 10-minute Q&A session in order to complete the accreditation of each participant. The following were the presenters and their respective projects:

Ms. Maham Siddique – Advanced Metering Infrastructure: A software-based energy metering solution with features such as bi-directional metering, power quality analysis and theft monitoring along with an integrated IoT mobile application.

Mr. Mirza Muhammad Ali – Gravitational Vortex Turbine: A turbine that employs hydropower in off-grid areas that require low-head power plants.

Mr. Shamir Khan – Airworks-Drone: A drone designed to enhances the efficiency of product management as it provides crop monitoring and field mapping. It helps increase the agricultural yield, and generates precision Ortho-mosaic maps for better crop planning and land management.

Ms. Seerat Zehra – CovideTECHt: This initiative allows efficient prevention of the spread of the novel corona virus. It employs the use of drones as well as facial scanning technology to detect the infection of the virus in humans.

Mr. Noman Satti – Falcon-X: The Leak Detection System: A leakage testing system. The system Incorporates STA Tech to sniff out leakages of various objects with precision

Mr. Fahad Iqbal – Self-Balancing Surveyor's Tripod Stand:  The project is about an instrument, or more precisely a device, that will make it easier to use various other surveyors' equipment in the field of land surveying and levelling.

After acknowledging the un-deniable effort of every participant, a short break was announced for the judges so that they could compile and finalize the result. During this interval, the host elaborated further on IMechE’s background and its achievements in the past.

After a short yet anxious wait, the following winners were announced:

1st Position- Mr. Noman Satti.

2nd Position- Ms. Maham Siddiqui.

3rd Position- Mr. Fahad Iqbal.

Eventually, the honourable guest, Mr Ahmed Jaudet Bilal who is the Director of Strategy & Special Projects as well as the Chief Executive Officer at Sapphire Group was introduced to the forum and was asked to share his views on the event and its progression. He vividly covered every detail of the event that was praise-worthy or was otherwise a means of sharing his perspective and experience with the audience. With his thoughtful speech, Mr. Jaudet not only boosted morale of the participants but imparted wisdom as well.

Following this, the judges were also invited one by one to share a few words. They whole-heartedly praised every participant, with a round of applause, for the efforts that they had put in for their presentations as it is critical to the event’s value and success.

In addition, IMechE DSU's work in virtually designing and implementing SOfE 2021 in its entirety was also acknowledged and the organisers were gratified. After thanking all IMechE members, judges, guests and participants for making this educational event possible, the host finally signed off.
