Speak Out for Engineering - South East Asia Regional Finals 2017

On the 14 October 2017, the Institution's South East Asia (SEA) Region conducted the Speak Out for Engineering (SOFE) regional finals at the Universiti Malaya (UM), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The event was led by the SEAR Young Member Representative, Dr. ME Raghunandan and the Chair, Ir. Mathew Thomas. It was well supported with active participation by young members of the IMechE’s UM Student Chapter & Malaysia Branch.

The SOFE SEA regional finals 2017 involved six participants – two winners of SOFE heats each from three country branches within the region:

  • Mr. Tan He Jiang and Mr. Heng Kun Qiang Amos (Singapore)
  • Mr. Philip Christopher Teo Eng Fuiand and Mr. Jevons Penaflor (Brunei)
  • Ms. Sandy Song Chia and Mr. Shashitharan Velosamy (Malaysia).

Our judges panel of Dr. SKL Walia, Ms. Angel Lim and Mr. Hueen O’Daniel Sutherland:  a mixture of eminent, experienced judges to assess each participant’s skill to communicate subjects of mechanical engineering effectively.

The event was officiated by Ir. Mathew Thomas (Chair, IMechE SEAR), Dr. ME Raghunandan (Young Member Rep, IMechE SEAR), Prof. Ong Kok Seng (Chair, IMechE Malaysia), Mr. Chia Chun Wah (Chair, IMechE Singapore), Mr. Hj Salleh Bostaman (Chair, IMechE Brunei), Mr. Zen Teng (Business Development Manager, IMechE SEAR), Mr. Achugovind Kumar (YMS Chair, Malaysia), & Associate Prof Dr. Tan Chou Yang (ALO, IMechE UM student chapter).

After long hours of intense competition, the first prize was awarded to Mr. Shashitharan Velosamy for his talk titled “Road printing robots: Future of road maintenance”. He received a certificate and cash prize amounting to £300.

Second prize was awarded to Mr. Jevons Penaflor from Brunei for his talk titled “Enhanced dispersion and orientation of the carbon fibre strands reinforced epoxy composites”. He received a certificate and cash prize amounting to £200.

The prize giving ceremony audience included about 100 students, IMechE members from across various student chapters in Malaysia and others. The competition was concluded with a photo session, followed by social and networking session and refreshments.
