Institution news
The Institution of Mechanical Engineers, in line with its core aims, supports the needs of employers to develop their engineers, and the profession, through uptake of membership and professional registration; it is keen to provide more focus in South East Asia.
As part of the Institution’s strategy, it has increased resources to support this activity and has been building up relationships with a range of corporate organisations. It is now at a stage where it wishes to both expand and localise its activities in the region.
Quan Zen Teng has joined the Institution as Business Development Manager for South East Asia, based in Kuala Lumpur. Zen brings over 20 years of business development experience in the manufacturing and recruitment services sector. He is initially focusing on the Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei markets.
Stephen Tetlow MBE, CEO of the Institution said:
“This is an exciting step forward for the Institution and recognition of our aims for SE Asia and wider international membership growth. Zen has proven experience in business and key account development and I am sure he will be an asset to the Institution and to the engineering profession in SE Asia. I hope that you will join me in welcoming Zen and supporting the further development of the Institution in SE Asia.”
Zen is responsible for creating and maintaining long term relationships with engineering employers, academia and relevant regulatory authorities that operate in those markets.
He aims to expand membership and develop professional registration in the region through a partnership approach with fellow professional engineering institutions, which have a strong presence in the region: the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) and the Institute of Marine, Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST).
All three institutions will work together to support the growth of professional engineering. They aim to collaborate and jointly promote development opportunities, events and initiatives for the benefit of engineers in the region and to grow the professional engineering network.
Zen commented: “I am excited to join IMechE at an exciting time in the institution’s growth and look forward to leveraging my past experience in increasing IMechE’s profile in the region. I hope I get the opportunity to meet and work with our members in South East Asia to look at new areas of growth and collaboration”.
The Institution of Mechanical Engineers has a long history in the SE Asia region with a thriving membership of over 4,000 members across the region.
