Membership of the IMechE is part of the culture of engineering in Rolls-Royce in the UK, but until recently the same did not apply for Rolls-Royce Deutschland. This has recently changed following a visit last year to Germany by Institution Past President, Jon Hilton.
Towards the end of his term as President in March 2017, as a guest of the IMechE Germany Group, Jon was hosted at the Dahlewitz site by the Managing Director of RRD, Alastair McIntosh, and invited to present the George Stephenson Lecture to a large gathering of engineers.
Jon's unique insight, derived from his involvement at the heart of Formula 1 and his phenomenal success as an entrepreneur, inspired many of those attending to express interest in joining the Institution. With Alastair's support, Jon´s visit was followed by a series of membership workshops in June and October by the International Business Development Manager for Rolls-Royce, Jade Abbott. These occasions were also used to train existing professionally registered engineers at RRD to become IMechE professional review interviewers and mentors, who now form part of a wider network offering professional support for engineers in Germany coordinated by the Germany Group.
As a follow on from Jade’s visits to RRD last year, for the first time an IMechE fast track application workshop was undertaken in Dahlewitz on 20 March 2018 by Lara Mallett, Business Development Manager for Eastern and East Midlands. Lara is now supporting registration at this site since she already supports registration at Rolls-Royce in Derby, which is a sign of the level of interest that has been sparked within RRD. At the recent session, attendees were guided on how to complete their professional registration application and were offered a free review of their submission before they officially apply. Engineers of many different nationalities from both within and outside Europe participated in this latest event, highlighting that the IMechE and Rolls-Royce are both truly global organisations.
The IMechE look forward to undertaking another session in the Autumn at the Dahlewitz site, which will also be open to participants external to RRD. A big thank you to RRD for hosting the IMechE and the IMechE Germany Group for organising interviews. Particular acknowledgments are due to Tom Probert, Young Member representative for Berlin and East (and RRD employee), and Andy Storer, Chair of the Germany Group.
