If I could turn the clock back I would not have the cavities filled
Terry Bryant requests feedback from engineers who have retrofitted cavity wall insulation (Letters, PE December). I considered I was ahead of the times when a well-known company filled my wall cavities in 1988. I recently had some roof work carried out and was able to look down into an almost empty cavity.
Fortunately the installation carried a 30-year warranty and, on survey, it was found that the insulation had settled throughout, losing the upper third of the fill. The insulation was topped up.
I did not feel any tangible benefit on the initial fill or subsequent top-up or notice any reduction in heating costs. The surveyor stated he would never have the work done in his property as it brought too many problems.
If I could turn the clock back I would not have the cavities filled but wouldn't then have been able to claim a grant and interest-free loan for my solar thermal and photovoltaic panels.
