Professional Registration rides the crest of a wave at BAE Systems Maritime – Submarines

News Team

Members of the Institution’s business teams visited BAE Systems Maritime – Submarines’ Barrow in Furness site in September to celebrate the successes of 23 new Chartered Engineers and Fellows.

The Institution’s Senior Business Development Manager, Nicole Rinaldi, along with Director of Marketing and Communications, James Hobbs, and North West Business Development Manager, David Barrett,  were delighted to attend, and to congratulate the 13 new Chartered Engineers and ten new Fellows.

Professional recognition is highly encouraged and valued at Maritime – Submarines. It gives the Ministry of Defence confidence in the professional competence of the business’s engineers. Speaking at the celebration event, Stuart Godden, Maritime – Submarines Director of Engineering and Commissioning, said: “Building nuclear submarines is as complicated as anything in the UK, and probably in the world. There are no international design standards and a lot of what we do requires professionalism and commitment.”

Stuart thanked everybody for putting the time into their professional development on top of what he described as, “their day job, designing Astute and Successor”. He added: “It’s a time to reflect and take a bit of personal satisfaction. In gaining professional recognition from a really valuable peer group you have achieved something important, both for your own career and for the business.”

The latest bumper crop of Institution successes is thanks to a re-launch of the Company-Based Registration scheme at Barrow 18 months ago, a supported route to application that was introduced at Maritime – Submarines in 2000.

The re-launch was planned to encourage suitably experienced engineers, and engineers who had recently joined the business, to apply for Chartership. Fellowship was re-launched at the same time, to encourage more experienced senior engineers to become Fellows.

Martin Pulford, Engineering Capability Manager, said: “Ten new Fellows and 13 new Chartered Engineers is a really positive result. Four have gone through the Career Learning Assessment route and have been awarded CEng, and a further three are going through the process at the moment.”

James Hobbs said that there were some encouraging signs that the fortunes of manufacturing and engineering were improving. Against this backdrop it is gratifying that Institution membership is also growing each year. James added that the Institution’s priorities were to develop professional engineers; to set the agenda to ensure Government and the nation valued engineers; and to inspire the next generation and make sure new engineers are coming into the industry. He urged members to support this ambassador role.

Martin thanked David, Nicole and James for attending, and particularly thanked David Barrett for his continued support of the business. Martin also paid tribute to Paul Merrick FIMechE, who had provided valuable advice and feedback to those submitting applications to the Institution. Also attending the celebration was Graeme Corkill FIMechE, Assistant Chief Engineer on Successor, who is also Chairman of South Cumbria area committee.

A new round of Company-Based Registration for Maritime – Submarines engineers in Barrow was launched by David Barrett on 10 October. The Institution looks forward to celebrating the successful engineers from this group in 2014.
